Announced October 7, 2022, IRCC is temporarily lifting the off-campus work restriction for eligible students. IRCC minister Sean Fraser added that this temporary restriction will allow more than 500,000 students the option to work additional hours supporting both their income and Canadian businesses who are short of workers in key roles such as hospitality, construction, and others.
The removal of the 20 hours per week off-campus restriction will come in effect on November 15, 2022 and continue until the end of 2023 for eligible students. To be eligible, students must meet the following criteria:
Be a post-secondary student who holds a valid study permit with conditions allowing off-campus work and be eligible to work off-campus
Has approval for a study permit (has a valid letter of introduction), or has applied for a study permit prior to September 7, 2022.
To be clear; students who apply for a study permit on or after September 7, 2022 are not eligible to work more than 20 hours per week off-campus under this temporary policy. Students who do not meet the typical off-campus work criteria e.g. ESL students, students not enrolled full-time etc., are also not eligible for the above temporary policy.
